The Olympics are a great opportunity for the best players around the world to go head-to-head. It’s also a great opportunity to pit some NBA teammates against each other.
One such example are Chicago Bulls teammates Jimmy Butler and Nikola Mirotic. In the upcoming USA vs. Spain game, the guard and the forward will play against each other for the first time. This gave them an opportunity to talk a little friendly trash, and it’s an opportunity neither of them turned down.
Mirotic took the first shot on Twitter:
"Ey JIMMY… YES WE CAN ??" pic.twitter.com/be8dMppF9T
Then, after seeing his Twitter feed blow up, Butler took to Instagram to fire back:
It’s some pretty friendly ribbing between teammates, but perhaps tension will escalate if there is a close game.
Spain has been USA’s main competition in the last two Olympics, meeting them in the gold medal game both times. This year, with Spain missing the superior Gasol brother, the matchup will happen in the semifinals. After a slow start, Team USA seemed to find its form in its easy win over Argentina. We’ll see if they can carry the momentum into Butler’s matchup with his teammate.
